January Bookclubs

Current read for the Pulpwood Queens Bookclub: Miss Dreamsville and the Collier County Women's Literary Society by Amy Hill Hearth. I was fortunate to be able to meet Ms. Hearth at our annual Girlfriends Weekend in Jefferson, Texas earlier this month.

I'm back.....

I took a break from this for awhile (obvious, huh?)...Well, I'll try to be more diligent at posting.

School starts today....

My great-granddaughter, Zoe, starts 7th grade today. Time flies.....

Summer ending.....

Oh, my goodness...where have I been??
Well, I guess a better question would be where have I not been?
Summer is almost over and I am getting back to business.

Jeff Deaver and James Bond....

"Jeffery Deaver told a crowd gathered at the downtown Manhattan restaurant Imperial No. Nine that when the estate of Ian Fleming had asked if he'd be interested in writing an authorized James Bond novel. "I debated all of five seconds," he joked, and soon after got started on Carte Blanche, which Simon & Schuster released in the U.S. this week. The main challenge, he said, in updating Bond for the 21st century was to retain the flair and panache that Fleming gave Bond in the 1950s while making him a believable figure in a more politically correct contemporary setting. In addition, "I had to make the character work in my type of thriller"--plot-driven, where Fleming placed greater emphasis on character, he explained.

What did Deaver make of the mild controversy that's emerged in the U.K. about Bond being handled by an American thriller writer? "It's an author's job to create credible, living, breathing characters," he said. Bond was just another challenge... and it was just as challenging for me to write about Felix Leiter, the American CIA agent." Deaver did plenty of research for the novel, spending months overseas studying the intricacies of the British intelligence network and the nuances between American and British English. "And the book's been out for three weeks there," he noted, "and nobody has caught me in any slip-ups."--Ron Hogan

I am a hat lady....

Look what I found on Ebay (no, I am not buying it) - I have soooooooooooooo many hats already. But, next time I make a hat, it may be similar to this one.

I love books....

And magazines are books!

I have quite a few vintage magazines that I prize highly. My oldest one so far is the May, 1888 issue of "The Cottage Hearth". A one-year subscription was $1.50 or 15 cents per issue.

It contains an article by Mary Bartol entitled "The Author of 'Little Women'".

Included is an article "Artful Decoration and Amusement" by A. W. Ombat, which has pictures of a "Frame for Marine Picture' and "Row-Boat Bookshelves". Good design lasts forever.

And the "Latest Styles in Millinery".

Edna's Emporium ....

My newest venture is selling "stuff" at an antique mall. I moved into a very small space in August of last year and have just recently enlarged the space. I sell glassware (kitchen and decorative), sewing items, kitchenware, books, hats, and other sundry and wonderful items. It's becoming more and more work - but fun. I work four days each month as part payment for the space, and have met many wonderful people.

Round Top Festival - March/April 2011

My sisters and I went to the Round Top Festival earlier this week ---- did not expect so many wonderful things to look at. We were exhausted after about 6 hours, and had to quit for the day. Did a little exploring the second day, but not much buying. My little Hyundai just does not hold that much. Will have to take a BIG truck next year.
And, of course, I had not taken my camera --- shame on me. But, again I will be better prepared next year.

I'm back....

I've been gone awhile - trying to keep up with life and work.
But, I've kept up and here I am again.
More news later.
